My Experience with WordPress Premium for a Year & Reading Update ðŸŒ¿

🌿 Hi, guys! I hope you’re having a beautiful day and a great start to the week!❤️ Today I bring you a different section, I want to be able to talk to you about some perhaps more personal topics or also about things from the blog and my reading habits and I couldn’t find any time to do it, so I thought it would be good to start this new section in the blog where I’ll share with you what’s happening with me and in my life right now, and also things that I want to chat with you and know your opinion about. Obviously, I’ll only be using it for things that I see as important, or that seems interesting to discuss or chat with you. 😊
I don’t want any place or section in my blog to be negative in any way, this will not be either, so don’t be afraid to stay, here we’ll discuss other things that I regularly miss or sometimes I tell them very superficially in other posts and I think they deserve greater attention and depth.

With that said, today I wanted to chat a bit with you about my experience having and using WordPress Premium for a whole year and how I felt about it, and my general opinion. I also want to share with you what I’m reading right now and what book I’ve recently decided DNFed and why. I hope you enjoy, that this is something that you might find interesting or useful in some way and decide to stay and chat with me & without further ado, let’s start! 🌿

Copia de Book Reviews List

On July 26, 2019, I made the decision to try the Premium version of WordPress for my blog because I had heard positive things and I honestly wanted to give a more professional look to my blog and also the possibility of earning a little money was really great. Of course, at that time there was very little that I knew about what this type of plan included and obviously, I don’t have much idea putting together websites and putting things, you know, all the technical part of it, and then I did a little research because I wanted to know the pros and cons of that plan. I google it and honestly, guys I ended up more confused than I started, I think we really need more simple guides for people who, like me, don’t have much knowledge about building pages, pluggings and everything that this requires because to date I haven’t found something simple to understand about that, but anyway, I decided to give it a chance for at least a year and see how it goes, I had the money at that time and I was also lucky that it was just on discount, so I ended up paying 76 dollars for the whole year.  👍🏻

I really like the possibilities of more themes and letters and a tool to make the blog look prettier, also I really liked that throughout the year I’ve received very good e-mails that were very helpful to learn and improve my blog, which I really appreciate. 😊
Even so, today having lived with this plan for a whole year, I don’t think it was for me, I did enjoy it, and I don’t regret having lived the experience, I think there are things we have to live to learn and know how we feel about. 👏🏻 But I’ve made the decision not to renew the plan this year and stick with my classic blog, which of course isn’t such a tragedy, I love my blog, you know that, but: Why do I think it wasn’t useful for me? Well, I don’t think it’s a good deal to pay almost $100 for the annual plan when I couldn’t get that money back all year, you know? In my ignorance I thought that maybe I could at least earn some money to renew it, it wasn’t the case, but this is my fault and my misinformation on the subject.
I made 7 dollars with my blog for a whole year, that of course with the number of visits and being able to use the adds, and I know that being a book blogger is a lot, right, guys? but obviously, it’s not worth it for me right now to pay a premium plan if I’m not going to get that money back as an investment, but it will be just an expense for me at this point.

I want to share this with you because I know that maybe someone out there or maybe some of you, are thinking of buying some plan or maybe you’re needing to know some experience, well this is mine and I hope that in some way, it’s helpful, I like to be able to share it with you. It was also a great lesson for me and now I’m more clear about what I want to do with my blog at the moment, and what I want to do & where I want to go in the future.  🥰
I’m not saying that the Premium plan is a negative thing or that you should not try it yourself, but I do want you to take into account several points before buying it. The first is, what do you use your blog for? It’s important to keep in mind, what resources do you need or where will you be focusing on or going with your blog, to know if this is the plan for you or not. I don’t sell anything with my blog, I only share my thoughts so it wasn’t perhaps the best idea, nor do I have such a large audience to be able to have a significant profit with the adds. I’ve read that you must have at least 10,000 visits a day to earn real money, but I don’t know much about it, so I don’t want to go deeper into the subject.

In summary and to finish, I think it has been a positive experience that has left me with teachings. Probably by the time you’re reading this, maybe my blog will not look the same and that’s fine, I’ll have to get used to it again, so it’s ok, I’ll be making some changes so that all this how I like it, so be patient with me, because I really don’t want to stress out on this cause it’s something I love.
If I have to be honest with you now, I feel so sad to lose my domain, since it came with the plan and at this moment I don’t have the money to buy another, but well, I know that in the future I’ll have my own domain and everything is fine, maybe even in the future I decide to try self-hosted, you never know, what I know is that I want to continue trying new things, I’m very excited about the future of my baby blog. I hope nobody has problems finding me, that worries me because I don’t know how that works, but I hope that if you read this you know what’s happening with my blog and you can find me 😂

I want to thank you again for the support and love that I receive all the time, I see each one of you as my friends and my family ❤️ & If you want to support me you can buy your books using my affiliate link of Book Depository, that helps me a lot, you know that I’m from Argentina and here the dollar is so high, so you give me the opportunity to earn a small commission that actually really counts to me to save on things from the blog and to more readings. You can also buy me a coffee HERE. LOVE YOU!  🥰

🌿 Ninth House (Alex Stern #1) by Leigh Bardugo | OMG, I don’t even know where to start, I tried reading this book a few days ago and it was a disaster. I don’t like anything about it, I think I read about 150 pages of it and couldn’t continue despite the promises that it gets better, I really didn’t care enough to find out. It’s so sad and disappointing for me that this book hasn’t just captivated me as I expected, because it is the book of my Queen Bardugo and I love her, she’ll always be one of my favorite authors in fantasy, but this side of her isn’t for me. I find the experience of reading it super tedious, I didn’t enjoy it at any moment and that’s so sad, the characters seemed quite flat, the paced is TOO SLOW and there’s too much narration, which doesn’t mean that it’s bad, but it just wasn’t for me and that is ok, it’s valid and can happen sometimes.

🌿 The 7½ Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton | When I’m writing this I’m about to start reading this one, I’m very interested in the promise but if it doesn’t work for me then I’ll not push myself to read it, I’m coming from a reading slump and I don’t want to go through another one. Although I have a good feeling about it, cause I LOVE how it sounds, so I hope it’s another book that I can read before the end of the month, even so, I’m not rushing at all, if I don’t finish it, is fine and I’ll finish it for the next month in its place. I think that when you come to go through a slump you have to be super honest with yourself about the readings and above all take it easy, so that’s my state right now

  1. A great post, Sofii!
I have thought about changing to premium as well, since there are a few features I would like to try. I’m not sure about doing it since I’m not blogging all that consistantly. Time flies away and who knows. I’m a bit in a pickle here.
But it makes me consider it again, just for a trial period, maybe?

  2. This is a great post Sofi, I hope to see more content like this in the future😊
Sadly I don’t have the money to go self-hosted at the moment, but it’s good to know your experience with the premium plan. I’ve also seen other bloggers say that it’s a lot of money for what it offers and many people have prefered going self-hosted because of it. It’s sad to see that we as book bloggers barely earn anything from what we do, if we could receive earnings then the investment in our blogs would result in a better image, branding, etc but unfortunately right now, it’s more an expense than an investement as you say😕
I agree with you on Ninth House. It’s such a slooowww book, it took me like three days to read thirty pages and I decided to DNF it last october. Plus the trigger warnings are a bit scary😕 i hope you like the 7 deaths of evelyn hardcastle! It looks like an amazing book🤗

    1. It makes me happy that you liked it, beautiful! ❤️ I love the idea of sharing even more of myself with all of you.🥺
No doubt it’s a lot of money for what we can do with the plan, even more when as book bloggers our possibilities are so limited, I hope one day that will change, though, we deserve better! 👏🏻 and today, having lived the experience, I think that the self-hosted option would be the best option.😊

OMG I’m so glad I’m not the only one who DNFed Ninth House, it’s a shame because I thought I would love it, but I just couldn’t and I think the best option was to leave it there &
      I’m enjoying The 7 Deads, it’s a very unique idea.😍
I hope you have a wonderful end of the month, Cielo ✨

  3. Thanks for sharing your experience with premium!! I’ve always been curious about what the different plans actually offer, and this is super helpful (:
I totally agree with you about Ninth House – I actually (kinda) DNF-ed too!! I’d like to go back and reread, but ugh yes it was SO slow and the characters were just boring?? And the magic system was a little odd and not really my cup of tea.
Thanks for a great pot!! 🥰

    1. I’m SO glad that I was able to be of some help, I think we need to be honest, so we can help others think it through before buying any plan. 😊✨ Oh, I’m sorry that you had the same experience with Ninth House, I agree 100% with you, I felt all the same and the magic system is so rare, I didn’t fully understand it. 😅 I hope it’s better once you get back to it, I would love to know your thoughts. 🥰
I hope you have a beautiful end of the month ❤️

  4. Thank you for sharing that experience! Honestly, I’ve thought about it, but I feel like if I ever want to make money off of this or through Instagram, then affiliate links would be the best option for me. I can’t believe though how little you made, with a $100 (then $70 with discount) plan! That’s crazy, and you have such a great blog and posts! Thank you for learning this lesson for a lot of us! :). Looking forward to your thoughts on Evelyn Hardcastle, if you decide to continue on with it!

    1. I think affiliate links are a great idea! I’ve had very good experience with them in the past.😊
I know, right? I wish that as book bloggers we had more options, I don’t see anything wrong with making money with something you love to do, right? I’m glad I was able to help in some way that was all I wanted ❤️ & I’m almost half with Evelyn Hardcastle and I’m really enjoying it! it’s a such an original idea 😄✨

  5. Thank you for sharing your experience with premium. It has always been something tempting to do but not realistic for me, but I loved reading how it was for you as I never saw anyone discussing it.
Ninth House was a weird book. If I had to be honest, I only really enjoyed the ending (which made me a bit excited about the next one) but I didn’t like or care about the characters, the setting was not that interesting and I agree that the story was slow. Was it worth the hype? Well, for me no. I expected something else. However, I will probably try to read the next one because the ending left me with some questions and a bit more interested in the story as a whole!
Hope you enjoy your next read! ✨

    1. You’re welcome, honey! I’m glad to be able to share my experience and maybe I can help someone make the best decision, it’s so important that we be honest about this kind of thing.🥰 I loved to know your thoughts on Ninth House, I really still feel so disappointed, and I’m sorry it wasn’t what you hoped for, I hope the sequel is something you enjoy more. 😊✨ Thank you, beautiful, I hope you have a wonderful end of the month ❤️

  7. I switched from free to premium plan in April. I saved money last year by buying less books and in other ways so I had money for Premium but I don’t have much hope in earning the money back. Next year I’m thinking to try self hosted WordPress. I’m still researching things but from what little I know I think it would be better than this.

  8. This is very helpful, love! Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I’ve always wondered about the Premium plans myself, but never knew if it would be a good idea to commit to it or not. I love the idea of having more flexibility with customization of my blog, but maybe you’re right that it’s not really worth it.

I also heard that 10.000 daily hits is what you want before monetizing your website, so I’m still a long way from it 😀

Yeah… Ninth House took me a LONG time to read. I was never really compelled to pick it up.

    1. I’m SO glad you find it helpful to know my experience, love. ❤️✨
I honestly think that the best option if we ever want to go one step further is to bet on self-hosted. I would love that as book bloggers we have more possibilities to grow, but I hope that one day our work will be valued more, right? 🥺
Ninth House is so slow, I expected something else from it, but I hope that the author’s work in the future will captivate me more *fingers crossed* 🥰

  9. Thank you for talking about your experience with WordPress premium! I haven’t used it, but I’ve heard similar things from others, so that is good to know. I have been looking more into wordpress.org, but I really have no idea how website building works either, so I’m a little intimidated by it. & noo, I’m so sad you weren’t loving Ninth House! It’s on my TBR & I am still excited to pick it up for myself, but I do wish you had enjoyed it 😭

    1. I’m glad it’s helpful, honey ❤️ OMG, I have the same situation, honestly we need more simple tutorials on how to put together websites and stuff.😅
Oh, I know! 🥺 I wanted so much to love it, but it just wasn’t for me, I’m super disappointed, especially because I love the author, but I really hope you can enjoy it more, I would love to know your opinion 🥰

  10. great post! I currently use wordpress premium and DEFINIETLY don’t make the money I spend on it back and have been debating if I will renew it this time around, so it was great to read about your thoughts with it!

  11. Thanks for sharing, Sofii!! I tried premium and didn’t think it was worth the money as I didn’t think there were many new templates (and I ended up using the same one I had been using before anyway). Going self-hosted is about the same cost, but I have so much more flexibility, which is something that I craved. It’s still not perfect, but it’s better, and I really like the plug-ins!!

  12. Thank you so much for sharing your experience, Sofi, this is so valuable and so interesting to hear! 🥰 Going self-hosted is much scarier than just opting for a wordpress plan, but it’s definitely something I’ve been considering someday when I can, as well 🥰 I hope you’ll be able to do that too, soon, love!

  13. The main reason I’ve considered going to a paid plan is that I’m seeing a LOT of ads on other people’s free WP blogs, and I would rather not have those on mine. I didn’t think that costed more than $3 or $5 a month, though… Glad to have heard your thoughts on the subject.

  14. Thank you for sharing your experience, I’ve never paid for WP, I chose the self-hosted path rather. Which I actually prefer as you can get more or less the same features and plugins etc. It’s also cheaper, or for me in my country it is. But at the same time very scary because you’re a bit more on your own in terms of the back end. Though Jetpack is quite helpful, I’ve found. Best of luck!!

  15. Thanks so much for sharing! I’ve been going back and forth about whether to upgrade from free or to go self hosted or just keep my free WP site and it’s always so much to think about–it’s great to have some more perspective on it!

  16. Lovely post, Sofii. I have occasionally considered upgrading my WordPress but have always decided against it. It was really interesting to read about your experience.

I’m so sorry to hear that you didn’t enjoy Ninth House. I hope you love Evelyn Hardcastle as it is one of my favourite books. Take your time though if you are in a slump – it is an extremely complex book. 🙂 🙂

    1. I’m glad my experience can be of some help, Steph! 😊✨ & I’m sorry about Ninth House too, I was hoping to love it and so far I’m really enjoying Evelyn Hardcastle, I’m going a little slow, but I’m not worried about that, the story is very good! 🥰

  17. Thank you so much for sharing this with us, I have been toying with the idea of getting a premium plan for my blog and I am haven’t been sure if I should, this gave me some great insight.

I adore your blog and nothing is gonna change that 💕

  18. Thank you for this post! I wouldn’t now, since I’m not as active at the moment — but a part of me really wanted to try the upgrade. I want more of the tools and the accessibility tools (I really want to push towards accessible content). But I don’t know if it’s really worth it. I know you can do it cheaper by an outside source but still using WordPress, but I haven’t done enough research on that yet. If I find it, I’ll send you the information 🙂

  19. lmao i keep hearing bad things about ninth house, and even though leigh bardugo is one of my favorite authors, i don’t think i’m ever gonna pick it up :”( also, thank you so much for sharing your experience with wordpress premium! i totally understand why you don’t want to continue paying for it anymore, especially because it’s not yielding much profit. don’t worry about not continuing to have it, i’m sure your blog will continue to be amazing as always 💕💕

    1. In general I don’t like to tell someone not to read a book, but GOD, Ninth House was disastrous for me and loving Leigh so much too, I would rather not have read it 😅 I look forward to her upcoming works, though, and hopefully they’ll resonate more with me. 🥰 Aww, Caitlin you’re the sweetest! ❤️

Thank you so much for your kind words, at one point I was sad, but honestly not much will change and the important thing is that I LOVE my blog and the community, so nothing will stop me 😄👏🏻✨
